History of CMHA BC's #GetLoud campaign
In 2015, the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) BC Division launched its GetLoud (formerly b4stage4) for mental health and substance use campaign. The objective of the campaign was to change the way we—all British Columbians—think about mental health and substance use. Our goal was to reach 1% of the population over the life of the campaign and 10,000 citizens in the lead up to the 2017 BC Provincial Election.
Thanks to you, CMHA’s b4stage4 campaign for the 2017 election truly changed the way we talk about mental health and substance use. Through the efforts of our supporters who tweeted, emailed and called their candidates, and who signed the declaration and shared it with others, we made the following impact:
- All three parties recognized the need to intervene early in life, and committed to better services for children and youth
- All three parties recognized the need for and committed to improving earlier access to services (NDP and Greens expressly supported early intervention, Liberals with an announcement to reduce wait lists for services)
- Many people voiced their personal experience with the mental health and addictions system, thousands signed the #b4stage4 declaration, and we built a movement of over 15,000 people
- We achieved Canada’s first Minister of Mental Health and Addictions here in B.C.
Now, after the election, there is much more to do to fix the fragmented and insufficient mental health and substance use systems in British Columbia. We’re recommitting ourselves to achieve our vision, which is why the next phase of our policy and advocacy work is Get Loud! We need to get louder to build more support, and dig deeper to develop a plan for the changes we want to see.
